Functional testing

Functional testing offers a deeper look into how your body is truly functioning at a cellular level, beyond what standard tests may reveal. At Bay Functional Health, we use these advanced tools to help us understand imbalances, deficiencies, or dysfunctions that may be affecting your energy, digestion, hormones, immunity, and more.

Testing is recommended on a case-by-case basis and is never required to begin treatment. However, it can provide valuable insight that allows for more targeted and effective support. Pricing varies depending on the type of test and ranges from approximately $15 to $1200.

We offer a wide range of functional testing options, including:

  • Think of it like a WOF for your body. Blood testing offers a detailed look at your health at a cellular level, helping to identify imbalances that may be overlooked in standard checks.

We interpret your results using optimal, not just standard reference ranges, giving you a clearer picture of what’s really going on.

We can analyse recent blood work from your GP or refer you privately through PathLab or Awanui labs for further investigation. Common panels include thyroid function, iron studies, hormones, liver markers, inflammation, and nutrient levels.

  • We use the Microbiomix Metagenomic Mapping (MMM) test—one of the most advanced gut tests available, using shotgun sequencing to identify over 28,000 microbial species. Your gut microbiome influences everything from digestion and immunity to mood and energy.

This test helps uncover inflammation, pathogenic overgrowth, and nutrient absorption issues, making it especially valuable for those with chronic gut symptoms, autoimmune conditions, fatigue, or mood imbalances. It’s our go-to tool for establishing a clear baseline and building a targeted, effective treatment plan.

  • We test for specific antibodies to detect early signs of immune dysregulation linked to conditions like Hashimoto’s, Graves’, coeliac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and pernicious anaemia. This helps guide treatment and monitor symptoms before more advanced disease develops.

  • Urine-based mycotoxin testing helps identify exposure to toxic moulds, which may contribute to fatigue, brain fog, respiratory issues, skin problems, and immune dysfunction. It’s especially useful for those with a history of water-damaged buildings or unexplained chronic symptoms.

  • Saliva testing is a simple, non-invasive way to measure active hormone levels across the day. It’s commonly used to assess cortisol and sex hormones like oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and DHEA helpful for identifying imbalances linked to fatigue, mood swings, PMS, low libido, and cycle irregularities.

  • Urine testing provides detailed insight into hormone balance, stress response, and metabolic health. The DUTCH test measures sex and adrenal hormones along with their metabolites, while the Organic Acids Test (OATs) assesses nutrient status, detoxification, mitochondrial function, and neurotransmitter activity. These tests are ideal for clients experiencing fatigue, mood changes, hormonal imbalance, or chronic illness.

  • Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (hair testing), analysis of heavy metal and toxin status, nutrient and mineral status
